Story:
A tiny man in a swivel office chair that is far too large for him is facing the two gigantic women in the cubicles across the aisle from him. The woman on the right has ginger hair and is holding her stomach. An organization chart is visible on her computer monitor. The woman on the left has dark hair and mixed white and Asian features. She is wearing a mostly unbuttoned white blouse that reveals a tease of cleavage.

As days turned into weeks, Jake’s concerns about the office’s new direction were slowly validated. Jake started to find himself excluded from important meetings. When it happened the first time, he had been assured that it was just a simple oversight. But it kept happening. Conversations about key decisions and strategies were happening behind closed doors, with Jake left on the outside looking in.

And during the meetings he was included in, Jake’s input was continually brushed aside. His female colleagues frequently talked over him, and when a woman repeated one of his good ideas, she was the one who got credit for it. And while he was expected to address Anna as Ms. Everett, his female colleagues were still on a first name basis with the new boss.

Jake’s frustrations grew as he noticed that his female colleagues were increasingly pushing off secretarial and clerical work onto him. He was asked to make photocopies, file paperwork, and manage administrative tasks that he had never been responsible for before. It was as if his years of experience and insights were being disregarded in favor of more “hands-on” tasks that had always been delegated to interns and clerical staff in the past.

One afternoon, Jake found himself in the break room with Tiffany and Victoria, who were engrossed in an animated conversation about an upcoming project. When he tried to interject and share his thoughts, they exchanged polite smiles before continuing their discussion as if he hadn’t spoken. Jake felt a wave of frustration wash over him as he realized he was being sidelined once again.

One morning, he came into the office, and it quickly became apparent that some changes had been made. The desks had been re-arranged, and an unfamiliar young woman was seated next to Victoria.

“What’s going on?” Jake asked Victoria, feeling nervous. “Where’s Tiffany?”

Victoria swiveled her chair around to face him, a mischievous smirk playing on her lips. “Didn’t you read the email? Anna announced the unit’s new structure. We’re splitting into four teams: Strategy, Performance Metrics, Market Research, and Admin. Tiffany is heading up the Strategy Team, while Anna has chosen me to lead the Admin Team. So technically, I’m now your boss.”

Jake just stared up at her, at a loss for words. It was a double blow – not only had he been passed over for a more senior role yet again, but now his colleagues were ascending the corporate ladder while he felt stuck in place.

“It’s not exactly the way I envisioned moving up,” Victoria continued, a hint of smugness in her voice. “But at least I’m making progress in my career. Oh, and by the way, you will address me as Ms. Waters from now on.”

Jake’s frustration boiled beneath the surface, but he managed a forced smile. “Of course, Ms. Waters. Congratulations on your promotion.”

Victoria’s grin widened. “Thank you, Jake. I always knew that I was destined to be your superior.”

As Jake was about to respond, the unfamiliar young woman seated next to Victoria turned towards him, extending her hand with a friendly smile. “Hi, I don’t believe we’ve been introduced.”

Victoria leaned in, eager to facilitate the introduction. “Jake, meet Klara Tsai. She’s our newest hire.”

Klara’s smile was warm, and her handshake firm. “Jake, I’ve heard about you. Anna mentioned your extensive experience with the company and told me you were an important early mentor for her. I’m really excited to be working alongside such an esteemed colleague.”

Jake looked up at the new girl with surprise. “Wait, you know Ms. Everett?”

Klara nodded, her expression brightening. “Yes, we graduated from Princeton together, and were even in the same sorority. She reached out when she took over the unit. I’m thrilled to be here and contribute to the team.”

Even as he worried about what her hiring would mean for his career prospects, he couldn’t help but notice Klara’s beauty.

As the Admin Team’s new leader, Victoria wasted no time asserting her authority. Klara was pulled into some of the highest profile projects almost immediately, while Victoria stuck Jake with the most menial assignments, tasks that were far beneath his level of expertise. He was asked to compile data, organize files, and schedule meetings – duties that grated on him given his years of experience and proven ability to tackle more complex work. The tasks he was given seemed almost designed to remind him of his diminished status within the team, and were in stark contrast with the strategic discussions and decision-making that the women in the Admin Team were involved in.

Jake wished he had a reason to hate Klara. It was a bitter pill to swallow, knowing that someone who had just joined the company was already contributing to discussions he felt he should be leading. Unfortunately, she was likable in every way, and her intelligence and charisma were impossible to ignore. And she was so attractive that he sometimes found it distracting. Every cloud has a silver lining, he thought bitterly.

But with Victoria, the indignities kept piling up. Finally, after she was particularly insulting during a meeting, Jake decided to take a stand. He requested a meeting with Anna to discuss his role within the Unit and was gratified when she accepted. But his frustration grew as Anna kept rescheduling their sit-down as other meetings took precedence. Finally, when the meeting finally happened, Jake entered Anna’s office with a mixture of trepidation and determination coursing through his veins. He had waited long enough for this meeting, and he was determined to make his concerns known. Anna looked up from her desk, her towering figure dominating the room, and greeted him with a polite smile.

“Jake, please have a seat. I apologize that it took so long to meet with you. Things been quite hectic around here,” Anna said, motioning towards one of the smaller chairs opposite her desk that were specially designed to accommodate men’s smaller stature.

Jake nodded and took a deep breath as he sat down. “Thank you for finally making the time to meet with me, Ms. Everett.”

Anna leaned forward and looked down at him with an attentive expression. “Of course, Jake. I understand you have some concerns about your role within the unit. I’m here to listen.”

Jake hesitated for a moment, gathering his thoughts before speaking. “It’s just that… since the restructuring, I’ve noticed a significant shift in my responsibilities. I’m being tasked with administrative and clerical work that’s far below my skill level and experience. I have years of experience with this company, and I know I can contribute more effectively. Meanwhile, newer colleagues like Klara are already participating in top-level discussions and high-profile projects.”

Anna nodded, and Jake felt like he was really being heard for the first time in weeks. “I understand your frustration, Jake, but I need to be honest with you. We all value your experience, but I’m taking the unit in a new direction now. And a new direction requires fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. Maybe it’s time for you to embrace a more supportive role within the Admin Team.”

Jake’s frustration simmered beneath the surface, but he maintained his composure. “I understand the need for new perspectives, Ms. Everett. But I can’t help but feel that my contributions are being overlooked and my skills are being underutilized.”

Anna’s tone was empathetic yet firm. “I appreciate your dedication and your concerns, Jake. However, I believe it’s important for all of us to adapt and evolve. Klara brings a unique skill set that complements the direction we’re headed, and her contributions have already proven valuable.”

Jake couldn’t help but feel a pang of resentment towards Klara, even though he recognized the truth in Anna’s words. He took a moment to collect his thoughts before responding. “I don’t want to undermine Klara’s contributions, but I believe there’s a way to incorporate my experience and insights without sacrificing the progress of newer team members.”

Her gaze thoughtful, Anna leaned toward him and put a large hand on his small shoulder. “Jake, I appreciate your commitment and your willingness to adapt. Let’s do this: I’ll give you the opportunity to collaborate with Klara on a few high-profile projects that would benefit from leveraging your combined expertise. At the same time, you’ll continue to provide administrative assistance to ensure that the Unit runs smoothly. Once those projects have been completed, we’ll touch base again and reevaluate.”

Jake’s frustration ebbed slightly. Anna’s proposal seemed like a step in the right direction. He appreciated the chance to contribute to high-profile projects, even if it meant working alongside Klara. “Thank you, Ms. Everett. I believe collaboration could indeed lead to more effective outcomes.”

Anna nodded, her expression serious. “I’m glad we could come to an agreement, Jake. Just remember that as the unit evolves, we all have to find ways to adapt and ensure our team’s success.”

As Jake left Anna’s office, he felt a renewed sense of purpose. While he was still uneasy about his changing role, he now had the opportunity to showcase his expertise and make a meaningful impact. He was determined to prove that his experience was valuable and that he could contribute to the unit’s new direction in a successful way.
