In the two years and change since the twins had been born, she had been able to really focus on her career with Jake handling things at home. Looking back, she was now amused by the guilt she had felt about the long hours the job required. After all, if she hadn’t put her career first, would she have been named #58 on LadyLux Magazine’s latest list of the America’s Most Powerful Women?

“Honey, I’m home!” she announced, savoring the smell wafting in from the kitchen. She kicked off her shoes and tossed her coat on the chair.

“Hi Klara,” Jake said as he rushed to hang up her coat and put her shoes away neatly in the closet.

“How was your day?” he asked, looking up at her earnestly.

“Busy, but I got a lot done. I won’t bore you with the details.”

There was no point in trying to explain it to him; it would all go over his head. And she didn’t like to dwell on work too long, lest he start bugging her about starting to work again part time. Klara had been clear that she didn’t want his attention diverted from the house and the kids, but he still kept bringing it up. Frankly, it would be unbecoming for a woman at her career level to have a husband who worked. Certainly none of the other executives’ trophy husbands would even think about earning a salary. But she knew better than to tell Jake that.

“What’s for dinner?” she asked as she followed him into the kitchen.

“My mother and Sarah went hunting over the weekend, and they dropped off some venison. I seared up the backstrap in the skillet and I’m just finishing it up in the oven now. I made mashed potatoes and green beans to go with it.”

“Sounds delicious.” She gave him an affectionate little pat on the rear, and he glanced back up at her with a smile.

“Where’s Kelly?” she asked.

Jake had started noticing that she hardly ever asked about Kyle these days.

“She’s up in her bedroom taking a time out after another bad tantrum this afternoon. Kyle’s in the family room watching cartoons, in case you were wondering.”

“I don’t know why you’re so hard on our daughter, Jake. It’s only natural for girls her age to be a little rambunctious.”

“This isn’t rambunctiousness, Klara. It’s outright defiance. I wish you hadn’t made such a big deal about her growing taller than me. I swear, ever since, it’s like she’s been picking fights with me.”

“Well, it was only a matter of time, dear. And it’s an important milestone in each young girl’s life when she surpasses her father in height. It deserves to be celebrated. I have faith that you’ll figure out how to adapt. I’ve got a few loose ends up from work to wrap up. I’ll be in my den. Come get me when dinner is ready.”

She bent down and kissed him on the top of his head, and then headed down the hall. She could hear Kyle giggling in the family room, engrossed by the colorful characters on the TV screen.

Upstairs, Kelly lay quietly on her bed, her anger slowly dissipating after her afternoon tantrum. She was a bright, strong-willed child who had inherited her mother’s determination.

After a brief period of quiet, Kelly decided it was time to leave her bedroom and explore the house. She toddled down the hallway, her curiosity driving her forward. As she reached the bottom of the stairs, she spotted her father in the kitchen, focused on finishing up the dinner hew was preparing.

Jake, completely engrossed in his cooking, didn’t notice Kelly’s presence until he felt her hand on his shoulder, seeking his attention. Startled, he turned to find her standing there, her chubby cheeks flushed with determination.

“Hey there, sweetie,” Jake said, looking up ever so slightly into her piercing green eyes.

“What can I do for you?” he asked, trying to keep the nervousness out of his voice.

But Kelly couldn’t convey her needs, and felt a fresh wave of frustration at the limitations of her nascent vocabulary. She simply pointed towards the pantry and let out a frustrated squeal. Jake tried to decipher her signals, but it was a challenge.

“Do you want a snack?” he ventured, opening the pantry door to reveal an array of snacks. Kelly shook her head vigorously, her frustration growing. She grabbed a bag of chips and thrust it toward him, her small hands trembling with impatience.

Jake realized that she wanted him to open the bag for her, but his attempts to communicate this only seemed to further agitate her. Kelly’s cheeks turned bright red, and she let out an ear-piercing scream. Panic washed over Jake as he struggled to calm her down.

Jake felt a sense of helplessness as Kelly’s screams echoed through the kitchen. He knew that his daughter was testing boundaries and asserting her independence, but her physical strength and stubbornness were increasing faster than he could adapt. He took a deep breath, reminding himself that he needed to handle the situation calmly and assertively.

“Okay, Kelly,” Jake said in a firm but gentle tone, trying to get her attention amidst the tantrum. “I understand you want the chips. I’ll open the bag for you, but we need to use our words and ask nicely, okay?”

Kelly’s wails began to subside as she locked eyes with her father, her frustration slowly ebbing as processed his words. She nodded and managed the words, “Chips, please.”

Jake smiled and praised her effort. “That’s right, sweetie! ‘Chips, please’ is how you ask nicely.”

He opened the bag of chips and handed her a few, making sure they didn’t make a mess on the floor. Kelly eagerly grabbed them and started munching, her tears now replaced with contentment.

A few minutes later, as Jake served Klara dinner, the stress must have been evident on his face.

“Did I hear a little commotion earlier?” Klara asked, as she picked up her fork.

Jake sighed heavily as he sat down beside her. “Well, after her tantrum, she settled down for the night. But I’m worried, Klara. She’s becoming more defiant, and I’m not sure how to handle it. She listens to you, but she challenges me constantly.”

Klara’s brow furrowed with concern as she leaned in to listen to Jake’s worries. “I understand it can be challenging, but you need to establish boundaries with her. She’s testing limits, and it’s essential for her development that she learns about consequences and discipline.”

Jake nodded, his frustration evident. “I’ve been trying, Klara, but it’s not that simple. I’m pretty sure she’s stronger than me now, and it’s hard to control her when she gets upset.”

Klara raised an eyebrow, puzzled by Jake’s statement. “Jake, you’re her father. You should be able to assert your authority and discipline her effectively. I don’t understand why you’re having so much trouble.”

Jake sighed, feeling the weight of his inadequacy as a parent. “Klara, you don’t understand. When you’re around, she behaves perfectly. It’s like she’s a different child. But when it’s just me and her, she becomes defiant and uncontrollable.”

Klara couldn’t hide her skepticism. “Jake, that sounds like an excuse. Children should respect their parents’ authority regardless of who is present. Maybe you just need to pay closer attention to how I parent her, and try to follow my lead.”

Jake bristled at Klara’s response, feeling both condescended to and misunderstood. He knew that her skepticism was rooted in her own success as a mother, and he couldn’t help but feel inadequate in comparison.

Over the next few days, Jake’s struggles with parenting Kelly continued. Kelly’s defiance seemed to escalate, especially when it was just her and Jake alone.Things came to a head on Friday afternoon. Klara had left for work as usual, leaving Jake in charge of looking after Kelly and Kyle. As Jake played with Kyle in the family room, he noticed that Kelly had grown unusually quiet in her bedroom upstairs. He decided he’d better check on her.

As Jake climbed the stairs to Kelly’s bedroom, a sense of unease gnawed at him. When he entered the room, he found Kelly standing by the window, a defiant look on her face. She had taken a marker and scribbled all over the wall, creating a colorful but unauthorized mural.

“Kelly, what have you done?” Jake asked, his voice stern but controlled.

Kelly turned to face him, a provocative glint in her eyes. She stood her ground, refusing to answer.

Jake felt a surge of frustration, but he tried to remain composed. “Kelly, this is not okay. You know we don’t draw on the walls. Now, give me the marker.”

But Kelly just stood there defiantly, her hand on her hip, looking down at her father.

Raising an eyebrow and tilting her head slightly she said, “Make me!”

“Kelly, I’m your father, and I’m in charge here,” Jake said firmly, stepping closer to her. “You need to give me the marker and understand that drawing on the walls is not allowed.”

But Kelly didn’t budge. Jake reached out to gently take the marker from her hand, hoping she would relinquish it willingly. But as he attempted to grasp the marker, Kelly’s strength surprised him. She held onto it tightly, her tiny hand surprisingly resilient.

Jake’s eyes widened in shock as he realized that he couldn’t extract it from her grasp. Kelly was indeed stronger than him now, and it was a sobering revelation. He couldn’t believe how quickly his little girl had grown.

Kelly realized it too, and was delighted. “No! No! No! No! You can’t make me. Daddy too little!”

Jake’s frustration grew, but he couldn’t allow himself to lose his temper. He followed her, moving slowly to avoid scaring her, and tried once more to retrieve the marker. This time, as Jake reached out, Kelly gave her father a hard push, causing Jake to stumble backward and lose his balance.

Shocked and caught off guard, Jake fell to the floor, his pride wounded and his authority undermined. Kelly continued to giggle, thinking she had won this battle.

Jake quickly realized that he needed to regroup and approach the situation differently. He couldn’t allow himself to be overpowered by his toddler daughter. Slowly getting back up, he maintained his composure and decided to disengage temporarily.

“Kelly, we’ll talk about this later,” he said firmly, making it clear that her actions were unacceptable. “Right now, you need to stay in your room for a timeout.”

Jake left Kelly’s room, closing the door behind him, his heart heavy with a mixture of frustration and a sense of helplessness. He couldn’t believe that his own daughter had physically overpowered him and challenged his authority in such a way. He knew he needed to regroup and come up with a better plan for dealing with her defiance.

Downstairs in the family room, he found Kyle playing contentedly with his toys. Jake took a moment to compose himself, taking deep breaths and reminding himself that he was still the parent and needed to find a way to assert his authority. Out of options, he decided to call his father for advice. The old man had raised two girls, after all, and made it look easy.

Jake retrieved his phone from his pocket and dialed his father’s number. As it rang, he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of embarrassment. Kelly’s recent behavior had shaken his confidence to its core.

“Hello?” came his father’s voice on the other end of the line.

“Hi, Dad, it’s Jake,” he began, his voice betraying a hint of frustration.

“Hey, Jake! What’s going on?” his father replied, his tone filled with concern.

Jake sighed, feeling the need to vent and seek guidance from someone with more experience. “Dad, I’m having a real problem with Kelly. She’s been acting out, and today, she physically overpowered me when I tried to discipline her.”

His father listened attentively, understanding the gravity of the situation. “I see. Well, kids can be challenging sometimes, especially when they’re testing boundaries. Tell me more about what happened.”

Jake recounted the incident with Kelly in her bedroom, explaining how she had drawn on the walls and refused to give up the marker. He also mentioned how she had pushed him, leaving him feeling both physically and emotionally defeated.

His father was thoughtful for a moment. “Jake, it’s important to remember that children go through different phases of development, and they will test boundaries from time to time. What’s crucial is how you respond to her challenges.”

Jake nodded, appreciating his father’s insight. “I understand that, Dad. But I don’t know how to handle this. She listens to Klara without any issues, but when it’s just me and her, it’s like she becomes a different child.”

His father chuckled softly. “Well, Jake, kids are smart. Kelly knows that Klara is bigger and stronger than she is, and she also knows that Klara is the head of the household. Both of those things give your wife an innate authority that you lack.”

“How did you navigate that with Sarah and Emily?” Jake asked, the desperation evident in his voice.

“I never let myself get drawn into contests of dominance, for starters. Today you learned a valuable lesson. You’re already smaller and weaker than Kelly, and she’s only going to get a lot bigger and stronger.”

Jake heard his father sigh. “Loud, ineffectual orders won’t get you anywhere. They won’t earn her respect, but they might earn you a black eye or even broken bones someday if you’re not careful.”

“Well then, what’s the alternative?” Jake genuinely wanted to know.

“You have to be persuasive. With Sarah and Emily, most of the time, a stronger argument was all it took.”

“And the rest of the time?” Jake asked wryly.

He could hear his father chuckle over the phone. “The rest of the time, I made a strategic retreat and let your mother handle it. You and Klara need to be on the same page when it comes to discipline and boundaries, and you need to convince her that you’ll need her support in those areas.”

“Thanks, Dad,” Jake said sincerely. “I appreciate your guidance. I’ll try to be more persuasive with Kelly and make sure Klara and I are on the same page.”

His father reassured him, “Remember, parenting is a learning process, and it’s okay to seek help and advice when needed. You’ll figure this out, Jake.”

Feeling a bit more confident, Jake hung up the phone and decided to take a moment to collect his thoughts. He realized that he needed to have an open and honest conversation with Klara about the challenges he was facing with Kelly. She needed to understand that their daughter’s defiance was becoming a real issue, and they needed to tackle it together as a team.

Later that evening, after Klara had returned from work, they sat down together in her den to discuss the situation. Jake recounted the recent incident with Kelly and his conversation with his father. He emphasized the need for both of them to work together to address their daughter’s behavior.

Klara listened attentively, her expression serious as she processed Jake’s words.

After a moment of silence, Klara spoke, “Jake, I appreciate your honesty and your willingness to reach out to your father for advice. It’s crucial that we address Kelly’s behavior as a united front. I know it can be challenging, but we can’t let her defiance go unchecked.”

Jake nodded, relieved that Klara was taking him seriously. “I agree, Klara. And this is one of those times when I think it’s important for me to defer to your judgement. How should we handle it?”

Klara took a moment to gather her thoughts before responding. “First, Jake, I want you to know that I understand how frustrating this situation has been for you. I’m grateful that you’re reaching out and seeking help to deal with it. It shows a realistic understanding of your limitations, and proper respect for my authority as the head of our family.”

Jake appreciated Klara’s understanding and acknowledgment of his efforts. He knew that their discussion was a positive step towards addressing Kelly’s defiant behavior together.

“Thank you, Klara,” Jake replied sincerely. “I’m committed to supporting you in maintaining discipline and boundaries with Kelly. I’ve realized that it’s crucial for both of us to be consistent in our approach.”

Klara smiled at Jake, her expression softening. “That’s a great attitude, Jake. I think we should sit Kelly down and make sure she understands that your decisions carry the weight of my authority. When she disobeys you, she needs to understand that she’s also disobeying me.”

Jake and Klara decided to have a family meeting to address the issue with Kelly. They wanted to ensure that she understood the importance of following both of their instructions and respecting their authority as parents.

That evening, after dinner, they gathered in the living room. Jake and Klara sat side by side on the couch, and Kelly and Kyle sat on the floor in front of them. Jake cleared his throat and began the discussion.

“Kelly,” he said, his tone firm but gentle, “we need to talk about something important. Mommy and I have noticed that sometimes you don’t listen to me when I ask you to do something, and that’s not okay.”

Kelly looked up at her father, her big green eyes wide with curiosity.

Jake continued, “Mom and I are a team when it comes to taking care of you and Kyle. But sometimes, when Mom isn’t here, you don’t listen to me as you should. You need to understand that when I ask you to do something or not to do something, it’s just as important as when Mommy does.”

Klara chimed in, reinforcing the message. “Kelly, we love you very much, and we want you to grow up to be a smart, strong, and respectful young lady. That means following our instructions, whether it’s from me or your father.”

Kelly looked at her mother, her face still displaying a hint of amusement. “But Daddy’s so itty bitty!”

Klara tried not to laugh. “Yes, sweetie, Daddy may be a lot smaller than Mommy, but that doesn’t mean his instructions are any less important. We need you to respect and obey both of us, okay?”

Kelly blinked her big green eyes, processing her mother’s words. “Have to listen to Daddy too?”

“Yes, Kelly,” Klara confirmed, smiling warmly at her daughter. “You have to listen to Daddy too. Daddy and I work together to take care of you and Kyle, and that means both of us have the same rules and expectations.”

Kelly sat there, processing the conversation. Her innocent curiosity and desire to understand her parents’ words were evident. She began to nod slowly, a sign that she was grasping the concept.

“Okay, Mommy. I listen to Daddy too,” Kelly said with determination.

Jake and Klara exchanged a pleased glance. They knew that it would take time for Kelly to fully adapt to the change, but her willingness to comply was a positive step in the right direction.

“Thank you, sweetheart,” Jake said, his voice filled with warmth. “That means a lot.”

With the family meeting concluded, they put the twins to bed. Afterwards, as they watched TV together with Jake snuggled close in Klara’s lap, Klara had another suggestion.

“With my long days and frequent business trips, I don’t think we can count on me always being available to reinforce discipline. To give you more leverage, especially with Kelly, we should consider a reward system for positive behavior. If Kelly meets certain expectations and follows the rules, she can earn rewards or privileges. This way, she’ll have another incentive to behave well.”

Jake thought that was a great idea. “What kind of rewards do you think would work best?”

Klara considered the question for a moment, her fingers gently playing with a strand of Jake’s hair. “I think we should start with some simple rewards that she can understand and look forward to. Maybe things like extra playtime, a special treat, or choosing a fun activity for the family to do together.”

Jake nodded in agreement. “That sounds reasonable. I’ll make a list of expectations and rewards for you to look over. Once you’ve made any changes you want to make, we can explain them to Kelly together. It will help her better understand consequences.”

Over the next couple of days, Jake and Klara put their plan into action. They created a list of expectations for Kelly, including things like following household rules, completing her chores, and showing respect to both of them. Each expectation had a corresponding reward, which they carefully explained to Kelly.

Jake started seeing positive changes in Kelly’s behavior almost immediately. She started to listen to her father more attentively and began to understand that his instructions were just as important as her mother’s. The rewards became a source of motivation for her, and helped defuse temper tantrums before they got out of control.

With the reinforcement of discipline and the introduction of rewards, the family atmosphere became more harmonious. Jake and Klara continued to work together as a team, ensuring that they presented the twins with a united front. Kelly and Kyle learned valuable lessons about respect, cooperation, and the importance of following rules.

As the twins’ third birthday drew closer, the family’s bond grew stronger, and Kelly’s defiance became a thing of the past. She remained a strong-willed and determined child, but now she channeled her energy into positive behaviors and accomplishments.

One evening, as they sat together in the living room, Klara couldn’t help but feel grateful for the unity they had achieved as a family. She leaned over and kissed Jake, her appreciation evident in her eyes.

“Jake,” she said softly, “thank you for being such a wonderful partner in parenting. I’m proud of the way we’ve handled this together, and I can see the positive impact it’s had on our family.”

Jake smiled up at Klara, feeling a deep sense of pride and contentment. “I couldn’t have done it without your leadership and guidance, Klara. With you at the head of our family, I know we’ll always be okay.”

As they sat together, watching their children play happily, Jake and Klara knew that they had overcome a challenging phase in their parenting journey. Their love, commitment, and willingness to adapt had not only strengthened their family bonds but had also made them better parents.
